The Music Kiosk: History of a Link between Rapallo and Chile

15 October 2024

3 minutes

Imagine walking along the Rapallo seafront, with the sea reflecting the sunlight and the scent of salt in the air. Suddenly, you find yourself in front of a wonderful Art Nouveau structure: the Chiosco della Musica, a monument that contains a unique story, which perhaps belongs to you more than you imagine.

This kiosk is not only a work of art, but an extraordinary gift made by the people of Rapallo who emigrated to Chile. In the 20s, many families left Rapallo to seek their fortune overseas, but, despite the distance, they never forgot their roots. It was precisely to keep alive the link with their land that they decided to raise funds to build this kiosk. In just three years, the dream came true, and in 1929, this splendid structure became the symbol of love for Rapallo and for music.

Under the dome frescoed by Giovanni Grifo, the great composers such as Verdi, Beethoven, Mozart and many others seem to watch over passers-by, recalling the concerts that once animated the square. It was here that people gathered, under that artistic roof, to listen to music, to feel part of something great and, after all, to rediscover that sense of community that emigration could not break.

The Music Kiosk

The Kiosk not only of music

But the history of the Kiosk is not only made up of music, in fact, during the Second World War, the structure was occupied by German soldiers who used it as a deposit for bags of cement and suffered serious damage. Yet, like the most beautiful stories, this one has also had its redemption. After the war, a careful restoration brought to light its original beauty, and during the works, the remains of an ancient pier resurfaced, now visible under a suggestive glass pyramid. The surrounding square, once lapped by the waves of the sea, has been paved and made pedestrian, transforming the entire area into a corner of history and beauty.

If your family helped build this kiosk, or if you know someone who did, know that this place belongs to you. The Music Kiosk is a symbol of the bond between Rapallo and its children who emigrated to Chile, a monument just waiting to be rediscovered. Returning to Rapallo is not just a physical journey, but a return to the origins, a way to reconnect with your roots and relive the gesture of generosity that united two worlds.

Don’t you also feel the call of your land? The Kiosk is there, like a silent witness, ready to tell you the story of your family, to make you feel part of a legacy that crosses time and space.
